Keeping your washable menstrual pads and undies clean is quicker and easier than you think! And while opting for a reusable product may seem like a small gesture, it’s actually a huge leap toward a greener, waste-free planet! So congrats. You’re the best. waste-free and green planet.

We made this speedy guide to show you how to wash and dry your menstrual undies in a flash!

Rinse, wash, dry

It’s normal for your flow to vary during your period. On lighter days, you might only need a single reusable pad, and on heavier days, you might need to replace it once or twice. Used pads can be either carefully folded in two or rolled up, then placed inside your carrying kit’s fluid resistent compartment. “What carrying bag?” you ask. Ah. Well, each pair of Mme L’Ovary’s undies comes with one!

Once you’re back home, you can wash your period undies the same way you wash regular underwear, but with an additional prep step: rinsing! Follow these simple steps to properly clean your menstrual undies, reusable sanitary pad,and carrying bag:

Rinse

Rinse the items under tap water, gently wringing out the blood.

You can also soak your underwear, pads, and carrying bag in a sink or bucket full of cold water for 15 minutes, then stir them around and give them a gentle squeeze to get the blood out. Just be sure you don’t wring them out with too much oomph – you might tear the fabric!

Dump out the old water, hold them under the tap, and keep on with that gentle wringing until the water runs clear. You might need to rinse 2 or 3 times depending on how heavy your flow was that day.

When the water starts running clear, you’verinsed enough. You can then move on to the next step.

Wash

Pre-washing (Optional): Disolve one of Mme L’Ovary’s special laundry capsulesin a sink or bucket full of warm water, and let your items soak for 10 minutes. Our biodegradable laundry capsules (wrapped in 100% compostable packaging) contain tea tree essential oils with antibacterial properties that give your undies and pads a thorough pre-wash.

Washing: Alright! It’s time to wash your menstrual undies, reusable pads, and carrying bag, either by hand or in the washing machine. Use warm water and a gentle detergent (preferably a biodegradable one).

Dry

The final step in caring for your Mme L’Ovary menstrual undies is laying them flat on a drying rack or hanging them from a clothesline. If needed, you can place them in the dryer for 10 minutes to bake out any remaining dampness and soften up the fabric.

Dig a hole in the ground and pour your pre-wash water at the foot of a tree, in your garden, or in the soil around your houseplants. Then go ahead and spread the soil back over the hole. Feel the harmony!

Extend the life of your period underwear

Mme L’Ovary’s menstrual undies are made of high-quality fabric (96% cotton and 6% lycra), which means you can expect to have a nice, long life together. Plus, since you only wear them during your period, they’ll last a suuuuper long time anyway.

Still, if you want to take some extra precautious to extend their life, check out these simple tips:

  • Hand washing is easier on the fabric. If you prefer a washing machine, we recommend the delicate cycle.
  • Also, adding a few drops of tea tree essential oil helps preserve the material thanks to its antibacterial properties.
  • Finally, air drying is gentler on fabric than a machine dryer.

When one of your pads or pairs of undies is in the wash, you’ll need backup, so stock up on a few pairs of Mme L’Ovary underwear, and don’t forget that you’ll need both daytime and nighttime wear!).
